Tony Havics, Cheri Marcham, Jack Springston – ACGIH Bioaerosols Assessment and Control

This week we welcome Tony Havics Dr. Cheri Marcham and Jack Springston to talk about the newly released 2nd edition of the ACGIH Bioaerosols Assessment and Control book. The long awaited update revises the 1999 version that made such a huge impact on the industry.

Mr. Havics is an Honors graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with over 35 years of experience in environmental, health and safety, building science, and materials science consulting.  He is a limited lecturer at Purdue University.   He was formerly adjunct faculty at for both IU School of Medicine and IUPUI.

Mr. Havics has extensive experience with buildings and mold development.  This includes building envelope evaluation, infrared thermography, energy load calculation, building envelope modeling using WUFI and MOIST, environmental condition monitoring, thermodynamics and heat transfer assessment, and moisture mapping.  He also has experience in mold investigations for schools, offices, condos, houses, medical facilities, retail stores, high-rise buildings, etc.; sampling using a variety of equipment for culturable and non-culturable mold samples; microscopical analysis by light and scanning electron microscopy of bulk, tape lifts, and air samples.  He has prepared plans and specifications for mold remediation of residences, banks, multistory condos, commercial offices, and hospitals.  He has managed mold remediation projects from one-day single room mold issues to half-year remediation of 26,000 linear feet of ductwork in a hospital. Mr. Havics has trained workers for investigation and mold remediation.

Jack Springston has over 36 years’ experience in industrial hygiene and occupational health. He has been a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) since 1993, and is one of less than 50 active CIHs who also hold a sub-specialty certificate in Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). He has also been a Certified Safety Professional since 1999. Jack currently is a technical consultant and subject matter expert for Atlas Technical Consultants in New York City and Long Island.

Jack has a BS Degree in Environmental Biology and a MS Degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. He is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and past-Chair of AIHA’s Indoor Environmental Quality, Biosafety & Environmental Microbiology, and Continuing Education committees. Jack currently serves as the Chair of American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists’ (ACGIH’s) Bioaerosols Committee and is one of the primary editors, as well as and author/co-author/contributor of several individual chapters, of ACGIH’s new publication Bioaerosols Assessment and Control, 2nd edition.

Dr, Cheri Marcham is an Associate Professor and Program Chair for the Master of Science in Occupational Safety Management degree program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is a CIH, CSP, a CHMM, and a Fellow of AIHA. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Arizona State University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Department of Occupational and Environmental Health.

Cheri has previously served on the Board of Directors of AIHA, BCSP, and BGC (formerly ABIH). She is a past chair of the AIHA Indoor Environmental Quality Committee and over the last five years, has served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the ACGIH Bioaerosols Committee. She is the author/co-author of several chapters and the co-editor for the ACGIH Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control, 2nd edition.
